Chapter seven
I will not learn for greed
A public pledge for high school, college, and graduate students. Sign it, share it, organize around it.
I believe my mind is a gift, and that gifts exist to be given.
I believe education is the formation of conscience and capability together — and that knowledge without conscience is a weapon.
I believe every human being has a right to dignified work, and that no corporation has the moral right to engineer the mass replacement of human livelihood for shareholder profit.
Therefore, I pledge
- I will not devote my studies or my labor to building AGI systems whose purpose is the replacement of human workers for the enrichment of shareholders.
- I will ask of every course, every internship, and every job offer: who does this serve, and who does this harm?
- I will bring my conscience — my faith, my ethics, my love of my fellow human beings — into every classroom and every workplace, and I will not check it at the recruiter’s door.
- I will use my talents for the betterment of humanity: for healing, teaching, building, defending, feeding, and truth-telling.
- I will support my classmates who refuse greed learning, so that no one has to stand alone.
- I will call on my school, my university, and my government to regulate AGI development, to refuse funding that buys silence, and to put human dignity above vendor money.
Signed in hope, and in revolutionary love.
